Nana Abena's Light Soup (Favourite Meal)

Every Sunday after church, Nana's kitchen filled with the smell of ginger and pepper. She never measured anything; "The soup will tell you," she would say, so it took three of her grandchildren standing beside her with notebooks to finally write this down. She always made extra, because someone unexpected always came by. Her secret was patience: she never rushed the meat, and she always strained the soup. "Patience makes the soup sweet."

Their Story

Abena taught primary school in Kumasi for 31 years before joining her children in Toronto, where she quickly became "Auntie" to half the neighbourhood. She sang alto in her church choir, grew peppers and garden eggs on a tiny balcony, and never let anyone leave her home hungry. She is remembered by her three children, seven grandchildren, and the many former students who still call her Madam Owusu.

Tributes

Farewell Nana

Grandma taught me to read before I started school, and she taught me that kindness is something you do, not something you say. Every Sunday her kitchen smelled of light soup and her laughter filled the house. We miss you, Nana.

Even though, you were just 5 years older than me, you taught me that kindness is something you do, not something you say. Every Sunday her kitchen smelled of light soup and her laughter filled the house. We love you, Nana.
